How It Works

It works through passing high pressure shockwaves through the tissue of the affected area. These shockwaves help with reorganisation and remodelling of scar tissue or tissue which is in a pathological state. It also helps excite your bodies own natural healing mechanisms thereby promoting tissue repair, as well as stimulating your bodies own mechanisms for coping with pain.

Evidence has shown it to be as effective as corticosteroid injections in the treatment and management of tennis and golfers elbow and achilles tendinopathy, without the invasion and potential side effects of a steroid injection. It also has favourable outcomes in the management of gluteal and hamstring tendinopathy, adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder) and chronic muscle tears.
Your therapist will be able to assess your condition and determine whether shockwave would be of benefit for you.

Typically, shockwave is suitable when your symptoms are not responding to conservative management. The actual duration of the shockwave treatment is approximately 15 minutes- during which time your therapist will apply a gel before using the probe of the machine to provide the shockwaves. The effects can often be felt a few days after the first treatment however research has shown that 3 sessions over a 3 week period gives more favourable outcomes. Success rate can be as 77% for chronic conditions which have not been remedied with other treatment modalities. It is also important to understand that as with most conditions there is no quick fix and that often there needs to be a combined treatment approach to achieve optimal outcomes. Your physiotherapist will advise you on suitable rehabilitation to do alongside shockwave therapy to make sure you are fully addressing all components of your recovery.

We are fortunate to have the most state of the art EMS shockwave machine and we offer treatment at The Beaconsfield clinic. Treatment costs are £300 for 3 sessions or £120 per session. Shockwave therapy is also covered by many insurance providers.
