Musculoskeletal ultrasound is a useful adjunct to physical assessment when diagnosing a variety of injuries. It enables us to see a live picture of your muscles, tendons and some of the joint structures. Performing certain movements during scanning can assist in fully understanding what structures are affected. Through visualising the injured area you can gain a better understanding of the underlying pathology to then gain a better insight into timeframes for healing and return to sport. It can also help guide further intervention which may be needed alongside or instead of physiotherapy in order for you to achieve optimal outcomes. It is as accurate as MRI for diagnosing some muscle, tendon and ligament injuries, and offers immediate results.
